Product description

  • Menthol (org) is a fragrance material with cooling properties that can be used in products such as aftershave. It has a fresh, sharp, herbal scent reminiscent of peppermint. The aroma is quite strong and dominant. Additionally, it is solid at room temperature, so preparing a dilution can be practical. While rarely used as a fragrance component in perfumes, it is commonly found in products such as sauna treatments, aftershaves, and bath products. A suitable 10% solution can be prepared using standard solvents: alcohol (96%), DPG, or IPM. Gentle heating in a water bath may be required. It does not mix, or mixes only very poorly, with water or glycerin. Notably, it is usually employed for its cooling effect rather than its scent. Only a very low dosage is required for this purpose, often below the olfactory threshold. In practice, a concentration of 0.1–0.5% in the final product (1–5% of a 10% solution in DPG) serves as a good starting point. At higher dosages, the cooling sensation can become unpleasant. In perfumery, it acts primarily as a top note and remains stable in most products, including soap. Menthol (org) is a solid at room temperature and is supplied as translucent crystals. It melts at approximately 40°C; if stored in warm conditions, it may melt and subsequently solidify into a solid mass. While this does not significantly affect quality, it makes the product less convenient to use. The substance has a long shelf life without loss of quality. It occurs naturally and can be extracted from mint oil or produced synthetically. We sell the natural
