Old-fashioned aftershave lotion

Old-fashioned aftershave lotion
Posted on 18-9-2026 by Jan

For this recipe for the ‘old-fashioned’ aftershave lotion, we drew inspiration from recipes from the period 1920-1960. However, we have given it our own twist.

It contains alum, a substance that helps blood clot from minor cuts. Menthol has a cooling effect and a fresh scent. The rest of the fragrance comes from hydrosols, which is the water remaining after making essential oil.

Supplies for 100 ml:
  • 50 ml (40 grams) Cosmetic hair water*
  • 25 ml (25 grams) Orange blossom water (organic)
  • 25 ml (25 grams) Rose water (organic)
  • A pinch (1 gram) of Alum
  • A few small pieces (0.2 grams) of Menthol (organic)

Furthermore, bottle(s) and spray nozzle(s) or cap(s) for a total of approximately 100 ml of aftershave, measuring cups, pipettes, funnel, small spoons, and so on.

Instructions

Dissolve the menthol in the cosmetic hair water. Stir well: the menthol will then dissolve fairly quickly. Mix the orange blossom water and rose water together and dissolve the alum in it. Mix everything together.

The aftershave is a bit cloudy. This is due to the low alcohol content of the aftershave, in which very little menthol dissolves. You can let it settle and pour it off. You can also leave it as is, though the disadvantage might be that the spray nozzle eventually gets clogged. On the other hand, it does look nice: an opal-colored liquid.

Put the old-fashioned aftershave lotion into one or more suitable bottles, with a combined capacity of 100 ml.

It will keep for up to several years.
